To mark the 100th anniversary of the Maybach Type 22, door number 9 conceals the epitome of German luxury saloons - the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class with biturbo V12 engine. 612 hp and 900 Nm of torque accelerate the 2,350 kg and 5.469 m long vehicle to 100 km/h in 4.5 s.
The V12 unit runs on Super Plus and has been on the market in Germany since spring 2021. To live up to its predecessor's reputation beeing the quietest saloon in the world, active driving noise compensation is also used here. The idea behind this was first used in the Nissan Bluebird ARX in the early 1990s.
n addition to the insulating foam on the rear wheel arch and the triangular windows in the C-pillar made of special glas laminates, as well as the double sealing of the cable grommet apertures in the bulkhead, the active driving noise compensation covers low-frequency noises, such as the sound caused by rolling, with sound waves in antiphase. Six acceleration sensors on the chassis determine reference signals which are used to calculate sound waves that are 180 degrees out of phase. Similar to noise cancelling headphones these compensating sound waves are adjusted with the help of microphones in the interior and emitted in less than three milliseconds. The bass speakers of the Burmester® high-end 4D surround sound system, consisting of 31 speakers and eight additional exciters, with a total output of 1,750 watts, are used for this purpose.
The Lightweighting Effect
The objective of the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC was certainly to achieve the maximum possible noise reduction, hence the active driving noise compensation complemented the other measures. From a lightweight construction point of view, however, it is interesting to use the existing loudspeaker system and to integrate the sound insulation function. In addition, this solution can be used for other vehicle types to replace insulation and special laminated glass through this function integration. As comparative values, it should be noted that the interior of the S-Class predecessor has 39 kg of primary noise insulation and 29 kg of carpet material, which also provides partly sound insulation.
