The gearshift knob of the Porsche 908/03 Spyder from 1970 shows that lightweight construction applies not only to large structural components but also to even the smallest vehicle parts. It was developed as part of Porsche’s consistent weight-reduction strategy for motorsports and was part of a comprehensive lightweight construction philosophy that encompassed the chassis, steering system, seat shell, pedals, and cockpit components. Every gram saved contributed to improved agility, acceleration, and driving dynamics, enabling the Porsche 908/03 to achieve success in demanding endurance races such as the Targa Florio and the 1,000-km race at the Nürburgring.

The technology
Instead of the materials commonly used at the time, such as aluminum or magnesium, the Porsche engineers opted for Mahogany wood, since it has an exceptionally low density. With a volume of about 33.5 cm³ the wooden gearshift knob weighed only 24 grams, whereas a comparable component made of aluminum weighs about 90 grams would have weighed.
In addition to its low specific weight, mahogany also offered sufficient rigidity, high durability, and a pleasant feel for the driver. This unusual choice of material reflected Porsche’s engineering philosophy of selecting materials based on their functional performance rather than on traditional conventions.
The lightweight construction aspect
Although the weight savings from a single gearshift knob may seem small at first glance, this component illustrates the principle of Cumulative lightweight construction. By replacing aluminum with mahogany, the weight of the gearshift knob was reduced by nearly 70 % was reduced, thereby contributing to Porsche's strategy of eliminating every unnecessary gram from the vehicle.
