With Alubas Tape, the companies FibreCoat and A+ Composites are presenting a thermoplastic fiber composite. The tape material consists of basalt fibers with an aluminum coating and a thermoplastic matrix. The aim of the successful material development was to create a high-performance, electrically conductive tape material for industrial lightweight construction - especially for structural applications with additional functional requirements.

The tape is based on a unidirectional structure: The basaltic continuous fibers are provided with specific electrical and thermal properties by means of an aluminum-containing coating. A thermoplastic material serves as the matrix material, which allows automated tape lay-up or winding processing. This makes the tape suitable for components subject to structural-mechanical loads where electromagnetic shielding, thermal conductivity or weight reduction are required at the same time.

According to the project partners, the interaction of the materials results in high mechanical strength, low density and a good stiffness-to-weight ratio. The basalt fiber tape thus offers an alternative to carbon fiber-reinforced systems when electrical conductivity or temperature tolerance are paramount.

For example, the tape can be integrated into protective covers for electrical modules, structural housings, assemblies in aviation or e-mobility as well as design components with additional technical functions. The combination of functionality and structural performance with low weight makes the tape a potential enabler for new applications in lightweight functional construction.
