The System
The SlimTorq™ Motor Platform Alva Industries’ new generation of frameless direct-drive torque motors is designed for applications where precision, compact design, and mass efficiency are equally critical. Based on a slotless, thin-profile architecture, the motors eliminate cogging torque while delivering high continuous torque, high motor constants, and large central through-holes. These features enable the easy integration of gearboxes, sensors, shafts, and cable guides.
The platform is available in the following versions: Lite and Max is available and allows developers to optimize the system for either minimal weight or maximum torque density. With motor sizes ranging from 25 mm to 190 mm SlimTorq™ is suitable for a wide range of applications, including robotics, humanoid robots, medical technology, aerospace, gimbals, reaction wheels, marine propulsion systems, and high-precision measurement systems where smooth motion and compact actuators are critical.
The combination of a slotless design, Halbach rotor architecture, and frameless integration enables highly efficient electromechanical systems with outstanding positioning accuracy and high reliability.

The technology
The technological foundation of SlimTorq™ is its patented FiberPrinting™ Manufacturing Process by Alva Industries—a technology protected by multiple patents that fundamentally redefines the manufacturing of stators.
Unlike conventional slotted laminated stator cores, this design produces FiberPrinting™ Ironless, slotless windings with a copper fill ratio of approximately 60 %, a non-staggered conductor geometry, and winding configurations optimized for specific applications.
The higher copper utilization reduces electrical resistance while improving torque, efficiency, and thermal properties. In combination with a Halbach Permanent Magnet Rotor The magnetic flux is specifically concentrated, which increases the motor constant and torque density while virtually eliminating cogging torque and torque fluctuations.
Because the manufacturing process is extremely flexible, motor dimensions can be customized without being constrained by fixed tool sizes. This allows motors to be quickly optimized for specific installation spaces and performance requirements. The result is scalable motor technology that simultaneously improves precision, efficiency, manufacturability, and design freedom.
The lightweight construction aspect
From a lightweight design perspective, SlimTorq™ demonstrates that weight reduction is not achieved solely through the use of lightweight materials, but primarily through a fundamental redesign of the electromagnetic architecture.
By eliminating stator teeth and the iron core, the inactive structural mass is significantly reduced while also preventing magnetic saturation. This results in particularly thin stator and rotor assemblies.
According to Alva Industries, this design allows for a Engine weight reduction of up to 50 % as well as a Doubling of Torque Density, so that the same or even higher performance can be achieved with significantly less material.
The large central through-hole further supports lightweight design at the system level by facilitating functional integration, reducing secondary support structures, improving use of installation space, and reducing the overall mass of the actuator.
For weight-sensitive applications such as humanoid robots, UAVs, satellite mechanisms, surgical robotics, and aerospace actuators, these properties result in lower system inertia, improved dynamic behavior, lower energy consumption, and a higher payload.
SlimTorq™ is thus an excellent example of modern lightweight design, in which structural efficiency, functional integration, and electromagnetic optimization work together to maximize the system’s overall performance—rather than merely reducing the weight of individual components.
