Simplified topology optimization of the entire vehicle chassis

TGM performed a simplified topology optimization as an iterative variant optimization of the chassis to find optimal load paths considering system constraints and package parameters in combination with the optimization of primary and secondary system weights in the system design domain beyond the system boundaries (cross-component approach). The simplified approach made it possible to run through more loops in time and achieve qualitative results. Based on the newly developed topology variants, 6 kg weight savings for the primary system and 3 kg weight savings for the secondary system as well as material-based weight savings at almost constant total costs could be determined.

Solution approaches:

  • Development of several variants of optimal topology chassis variants based on different parameters in a short time, taking into account system and housing constraints, especially in early design phases.
  • primary and secondary weight savings on the chassis and additionally in the surrounding system space beyond the system limits in a short time.
  • Qualitative evaluation of stiffness, load paths, desired material allocation, taking into account system and package restrictions.
